RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Pele’s son Edinho took over as manager of small club Londrina on Sunday and led the team to a 1-0 win before assuring fans his father of the football legend is “a fighter” and giving fighting all cancer.

Pele, 81, had a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021 and has been in and out of hospital regularly for chemotherapy ever since.

A urinary tract infection meant his last hospital stay was longer than planned but the three-time world champion is now back home, close to Santos, the city and club where he made his name.

“He’s good. He’s in a tough battle for his health, but my father is a fighter like he has been all his life,” Edinho told reporters. “He’s still struggling. Our family prays a lot for him him and we hope he will recover.”

Edinho, who played in goal for Santos in the 1990s, said he didn’t know if his father saw Londrina’s 1-0 win over Cianorte in Parana’s state championship.

“I confess I don’t know,” said Edinho. “But he’ll find out as soon as I tell him. Above all, we encourage him to get well again as quickly as possible.”

Edinho, 51, is normally Londrina’s U20 coach but was temporarily in charge of Sunday’s game.

He is expected to return to his normal duties next week with the arrival of a new first-team coach.

(The story has been refiled in the fifth paragraph to correct the team from Tubarao to Cianorte.)
