(Reuters) – Nottingham Forest will vacate 97 places when they host Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday to honor the fans who died at Hillsborough Stadium in April 1989, when the two sides last met in the competition.
94 Liverpool supporters were crushed to death in an overcrowded and fenced-off corral at the stadium in Sheffield ahead of an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Forest.
Three other victims succumbed to their injuries, with the 97th dying last June, 32 years after suffering severe and irreversible brain damage.
The abandoned game was repeated at Old Trafford the following month, with Liverpool advancing and eventually lifting the trophy.
“Never forget. 97 seats will be vacated at tomorrow’s game to honor those who lost their lives in our 1989 FA Cup semi-final,” Forest said in a statement https://twitter.com/NFFC/status/1505198910993620992.
“We look forward to welcoming Liverpool FC to the City Ground.”
Liverpool responded with a message that read: “Thank you for your solidarity.”
