AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Sebastien Haller continued to maintain his scoring record to help Ajax Amsterdam finish the Champions League group stage with a 100% record as they beat Sporting Lisbon 4-2 at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday.
Haller became only the second player after Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2017-18 season to score in each game of the six-game period as he took an eighth-minute penalty to lift his tally in the competition five. Now number 10.
Sporting equalized through Nuno Santos after 22 minutes but Brazil’s Antony restored the lead for the Netherlands just before half-time after a horrible defensive mistake by the visitors.
David Neres extended Ajax’s advantage in the 58th minute and four minutes later Steven Berghuis added a fourth, but Sporting took some consolation in the 78th minute with Bruno Tabata’s thunderous footwork that went close to the crossbar.
Ajax top Group C with 18 points maximum while champions Portugal, who have been confirmed as runners-up, finished with nine, using the final match to award several youngsters for the first time. out in the European tournament.
