Sleep In Heavenly Peace is building beds for children in need in Spring Branch

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – An organization that helps children get a better night’s sleep has discovered that a community is in greater need and is looking for help to expand production.

A retirement project takes on a whole new meaning for Gary Burns.

“In the past, when I was in business, I was doing charity mainly writing checks,” Burns recalls. “This just feels so much better being able to do something with your hands.”

It was a joint charity that turned his garage into a workshop. Lying on top of the sawdust were thousands of pieces of wood, tools, and fabric that Burns used to make the children’s beds.

They’re not for sale, but for free. It’s an item he’s made more of since he started three years ago.

“We made 20 and last year we delivered 379 beds,” says Burns.

And it’s not just the bed. Each child receives a full kit.

“We deliver wooden frames, mattresses, pillows, everything,” says Burns.

He is the chapter president of Sleep in the sky of peace organ. Service Chapter 20 zip codes.

Typically, Burns says 3% of children don’t have a bed. In Spring Branch, it is two digits.

To meet demand, the team is looking for a warehouse that can store beds year-round.

“We didn’t need the air conditioning in the warehouse that we were looking for,” explains Burns. “We only use big fans, but that will allow us to instantly increase our production by 40%.”

These are beds that aren’t just for a kid, says Burns. They can improve the quality of life and also help the children at school.

Burns recalls: “I had this happen with a kid. He was about 5 years old and we told him he was going to sleep on his own and he couldn’t understand.” “She’s lived her whole life sharing a bed, and that’s what she thinks everyone does.”

Burns said he hopes to bring more joy soon, not only to the kids but also to the wife who can get her garage back.

“That would be great for my wife, and it would be great for me in return,” Burns said.

It’s a retirement project that’s constantly evolving and helping hundreds of kids get a better night’s sleep.
