Sidney Poitier Dies, Oscar Winner & Civil Rights Activist Is 94 Years Old

Pioneering performer and civil rights activist Sidney Poitier has passed away. The actor lived to be 94 years old.

The actor’s cause of death has not been revealed at this time, but has been announced by Bahamian Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell. Along with making an impact on screen and behind the scenes, Poitier also used her star power to call attention to important topics including issues of civil rights and racial equality between the others.

Along with his film accolades, including an honorary Oscar in 2002 along with a 1959 nomination for The Defiant OnesPoitier also makes an impact on the small screen. Poitier received an Emmy Award nomination for his roles in Mandela and de Klerk as Divided but still equal. The actor’s other awards include the Kennedy Center Honors in 1995, and in 2009 Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

While leaving a lasting impact on film, television and history, Poitier also left behind six children.
