Michael Porter Jr. agreed to sign an extension of up to 5 years at rookie scale with Denver Nuggets last September. The deal is guaranteed to be $145.3 million and can be worth up to $172 million with incentives.
During the 2020-2021 season, the MPJ averaged 19 points, 7.3 rebounds and shot 45% from the 3-pointer line. The young Missouri forward had a good and productive year for Denver, helping them reach the semi-finals of the Western Conference.
Entering this year, MPJ fans will enter this 2021-2022 season with even higher hopes and expectations. Unfortunately for them, those hopes and dreams will be dashed following a season-ending injury. reported by Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN.
The Denver Nuggets later announced days later that the MPJ’s surgery was complete.
Dr. Andrew Dossett performed the surgery at the Carrell Clinic in Dallas, Texas. Dossett is a former doctor who has operated on MPJ’s back in the past.
For Nuggets fans, this can be seen as a major roadblock in the future to compete for the NBA championship. MPJ is said to be a piece of the trio Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. With Murray recovered from his ACL surgery, the future is drawing near. There is no timetable for MPJ as he is out indefinitely.
Is it time to worry in Denver or is it best to be patient?
It depends on how the MPJ is able to recover from this injury. We saw back in college when he was trying to compete after his first back surgery that his performance was below average. It took him about 3-4 years to look normal again.
He’s matured during the NBA bubble as we see MPJ take the next step in his game. The Denver Nuggets made it to the Western Conference Finals and won the championship (soon to be champion) Los Angeles Lakers.
Even though they lost in the series, Denver fans already see a bright light in their future with the young trio that will come this far.
If the MPJ can get back to normal after the recovery, it’s just a pause for the Denver Nuggets. If he can’t heal at a fast enough rate, Denver’s window may be smaller than we think.
The current MVP, Nikola Jokic, is at the peak of his career. He has seemed untouchable on the pitch at times and has played an important leadership role within the organization. With the MPJ out, it may not have had much of an impact on Jokic in the regular season, but the MPJ’s shooting ability and size will be greatly overlooked for the Denver Nuggets when it comes to the knockouts. Jokic can do a lot, but it’s not certain what he can do in the knockout stages without his talented teammate.
Thankfully for the Denver Nuggets fans, the team’s social media posts have been posting about Jamal’s recovery. We’ve seen him rush into training and hit the gym particularly hard. Hopefully Jamal can return in time this season for the knockout stages. Otherwise, Nikola Jokic has a noble task ahead of him during the upcoming post-season run.
To answer the following question, No, Nuggets fans shouldn’t worry. With advanced rehabilitation options in today’s sports, these young players will eventually return to their teams. Until then, climb aboard the Jokic; it will be a pretty ride…
