Sherri Shepherd ignores your ‘freaky’ negative posts

Sherri Shepherd performs “Sherri,” which airs Monday, September 12 at 10 a.m. WNYW/Ch. 5.

Shepherd, of course, is no newcomer to the genre, having co-hosted seven seasons (2007-2014) of The View, and last season frequently guest-hosting for Wendy Williams, who missed the entire season of The Wendy Williams Show” – which was canceled after 13 seasons by Debmar-Mercury, the producers behind “Sherri”.

“It’s a completely different environment and we’re in a new studio,” Shepherd, 55, told the Post.

“Am I borrowing something? [from ‘The Wendy Williams Show’]? nope I am not a borrower; I come up with something that’s unique – because if you try to borrow something from someone else, it doesn’t work.”

Shepherd answered a few questions about her new talk show and what viewers will see when “Sherri” hits the airwaves.

Is this a big change for you?

In addition to having experience co-hosting The View, I have also been a game show host on two game shows [“The Newlywed Game,” “Best Ever Trivia Show“] an hour at a time alone, which is a lot of replenishment and improvisation. I co-host an award-winning podcast called Two Funny Mamas with my best friend Kym Whitley and have been for the past three years. I do standup, where I’m on stage for 45 to 90 minutes and speaking alone… so I think I’ll do it [“Sherri”] alone makes it a little easier for me.

Will there be overarching themes or issues that you will cover?

Absolutely. I’m a comedian and I love standup comedy because I’ve been doing it for decades. I want to present comedians; There are so many great comics out there that just need a chance. They may not be able to sit on the couch and be interviewed… but they can sit in a chair across from me in Sherri’s Laugh Lounge and talk about their lives. It felt like the best feeling doing five minutes of standup on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” and then sitting on the couch with Jay, and he respects me as a standup comedian. And I got a job from it. So if I can do this for another comic? Wow.

Will there be the standard type of daytime talk show tariff such as B. cooking segments?

I think there are elements of a talk show that people love. I will implement them in the show with the Sherri touch. I love to eat and I take care of my health, so you’ll see [cooking] and exercise segments – but what will be different is that it’s Sherri doing them. You did very well on The View. Without giving details, people will see ease and know they can escape for an hour. We will be cheerful on purpose. I’ll bring that with me.

Do you pay close attention to reviews and what people say about you on social media?

You are in a win/win or no-win situation. When you’re in trouble, it’s not so good, and when people love you, it’s great. I won’t go into that; There are many people who worry about ratings. This is not my task. My job is to go out there and be Sherri and throw a party and open the door and say, “Come in and join us.”

At the age I am… that’s why I don’t pay too much attention to social media. Nobody who says anything pays my rent, pays my son’s tuition, nobody takes him to basketball practice. Not one person on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok… will make my son’s bed. So when you get to that age, these [comments on social media] not so important. Life matters, life matters. If I had that [talk show] coincidentally 18 years ago I would have been fixed. That’s what I learned on The View – I got fixated on what people said about me, wrote about me… and I realized that no matter what you say, you’re trying to surrender to everyone and the weight of opinions shoulders of the world, it will drive you insane. You know what I don’t like? Be crazy. I like peace in my life.
