In a statement today, AJ said: “I am deeply saddened that I will not be able to perform in the final due to a torn ligament in my right ankle. Learning to dance for the past 13 weeks has been an incredible honor and to do it with someone as special, patient and dedicated as Kai [Widdrington] is something I will cherish forever.

“Thanks to Nghiem’s ​​family for the experience, the medical team tried to get me back on my feet and most of the people at home watched and supported me. You made this experience memorable.

“Dancing seriously has been a lifelong dream and I’m so glad it came true. Good luck to my dance partners, John [Whaite] and Johannes [Radebe] and roses [Ayling-Ellis] and Giovanni [Pernice]. I’ll cheer you on (with one foot!). ”

Initial reports revealed the 33-year-old had to miss a day of training after suffering an injury and undergoing an examination.

Although the injury is very close to Saturday’s final, it is “hopefully” that AJ will be a good fit for this weekend’s gig.

Rhys Stephenson, who was eliminated in the semi-finals, yesterday ruled out a return as a final substitute.
