Keeping the kids entertained can be tiring – and expensive.
And we’ve come up with our own suggestions to help you enjoy cheap or even free family fun this winter.
GO DOWN TO WOOD: Immersed in nature. The Woodland Trust provides inspiration if you want to explore somewhere new. Towards woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods.
HANDLING OF MEMOries: Turn a day into an adventure with Treasure Trails. These self-guided tours cover villages, towns and cities across the UK and cost £9.99. There are mysteries and stories revealed along the way. If you solve the clues you can participate in the monthly £100 bonus draw. Visit asuretrails.co.uk.
DO NOT PAY TOP RETURN: Wacky Warehouse’s soothing hangouts are scattered across the country and are perfect for rainy days. Admission is usually around £5 per child. Toddlers get a discount for term time, while adult coffee and cakes are £2.99. Adults and infants under 12 months get free admission.
ASSIST: £5 for adults and infants under one year old
LAST TIME: For something different, try a small themed museum near you. Transport museums are generally good value and keep kids entertained. Free museums include the Greater Manchester Police Museum and the RNLI Grace Darling Museum in Northumberland. The latter honors a heroine who saves everyone from a shipwreck. Or try a plane simulator at the Fast Museum in Hampshire. Towards moneysavingexpert.com for a list of free museums.
TRUE TRACKING: Travel by train to another city or town nearby. Buy cheap low point tickets and enjoy the journey. Purchase the i-SPY On A Train Journey book, which allows children to earn “points” for discovering different attractions. It costs £2.69 at WHSmith and Amazon, down from an RRP of £2.99. Cross-country trains also have free i-SPY prints. Find it in the Train Ride Survival Guide at crosscountrytrains.co.uk/blog/travel-with-kids.
ASSIST: 30p to buy i-SPY books at WHSmith or Amazon
