It was one of the most shocking moments in live television history, and in the aftermath, we were all 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.
Williams posted her stunned reaction to her Instagram Story after Will Smith took to the stage in the middle of the 2022 Oscars and slapped Chris Rock in the face after making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
The first clip showed a few seconds of Williams at the awards ceremony in stunned silence, mouth open and not saying anything. In the second video, she said, “I just sat down thinking I need to put the drink away.”
The wild moment happened towards the end of the show as Rock was preparing to introduce the nominees for the Academy Award for Best Documentary. The camera flashed to Pinkett Smith and Rock said: “Jada I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.”
The reference was to the 1997 film starring Demi Moore, in which her character shaves her head and joins a military special forces unit. Jada, who suffers from an illness that causes hair loss, appeared to take offense at the joke, leading to Will responding by taking to the stage and slapping Rock in the face.
American television censored much of the exchange, but in uncensored footage Will Smith can be heard yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your frigging mouth” several times.
Rock was clearly stunned in real time. Such was Williams, who was honored as part of the film King Richard, which chronicles her father, Richard Williams.
Smith plays the title character in the film and minutes after swapping with Rock, he stunningly won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said in his acceptance speech. “At this time in my life I am overwhelmed by what God is asking of me to do and be in this world.”
