Selena: The Series – Who Was Selena Quintanilla? The real story behind the Netflix drama


The Netflix biographical drama Selena: The series is releasing its second season tomorrow (May 4), following the premiere of the first season in 2020.

The series is a coming-of-age story centered on Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla, who became known as “The Queen of Tejano Music.” There are nine episodes in each season.

According to the official description of the series Selena: The series follows the “heartbreaking and life-changing sacrifices she and her family make as they navigate the ups and downs of success, loss, love and music.”

Born in 1971, Quintanilla made her musical debut at age 10 as part of the band Selena y Los Dinos, along with two of her older siblings.

She played Tejano music, a musical fusion style borrowing from Mexican, American, Czech and German traditions.

After winning the Tejano Music Award for Female Singer of the Year in 1987 (the first of nine wins), Quintanilla led a surge in popularity for the genre.

She became the best-selling Latin American artist of the 1990s billboardinducted into the Latin Music Hall of Fame in 1995.

On March 31, 1995, when she was 23, Quintanilla was shot dead by Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of her fan club who had recently been fired for embezzling money.

The 1997 movie selena cast Jennifer Lopez as Quintanilla, with Lupe playing Ontiveros Saldívar.

In the Netflix series, the singer is portrayed by duskis Christian Serratos.
