Secret ingredient in Taco Bell beef shocks fast food fans

TACO Bell fans were shocked to discover the sweet ingredient the fast-food chain uses in its beef.

The fast-food chain revealed in 2014 that beef itself makes up just 88 percent of the ingredient list for the condiment Menu staples.

Taco Bell's ingredient list reveals that the seasoned beef that fills its tacos includes some unexpected ingredients, like cocoa powder.

recipe details published on the company’s website provide a glimpse of the remaining 12 percent and show that cocoa powder is mixed into the seasoned beef.

“We believe it’s important for consumers to make informed choices about what they eat, which is why we’ve provided details of our ingredients on our website for many years,” said Rob Poetsche, representative of Taco Bell ABCNews.com.

other ingredients the dish includes tomato paste, oats and caramel color.

Taco Bell says both the caramel color and the cocoa powder are used to enhance the color.

Matlodextrin, which Taco Bell says is a “mildly sweet sugar” found in natural sodas, is also mixed with the beef.

In addition to the color-enhancing ingredients, the company says sodium phosphates are used to give the seasoned beef its texture.

In 2011, Taco Bell began providing more specifics about what exactly was in the seasoned beef after it was hit by a lawsuit alleging that the taco filler didn’t contain enough beef to meet USDA requirements to fulfill.

Throughout the ordeal, Taco Bell denied the allegations, claiming that it met the beef qualifications.

The company then pulled back the curtain on its ingredients to reveal that the seasoned beef was 88 percent meat.

Following the disclosure, the plaintiffs dropped their lawsuit.

Taco Bell's increased transparency has coincided with a lawsuit accusing the company of not having enough beef to call it seasoned beef.
