Schumer is calling for an additional $12 billion in US aid to Ukraine’s war effort

Senator Chuck Schumer wants another $12 billion in US aid to Ukraine — and said Sunday the massive amount was necessary to defeat Russia “at this critical moment in Ukraine’s momentum.”

The New York Democrat and Senate leader said he will push to include the extra money in an upcoming budget agreement, which must be reached by the end of the month to keep the federal government open.

The move comes after Ukraine recently made stunning gains in its war against invader Russia. The US has sent more than $15 billion in aid so far, but Schumer says now is the time to strike with even more American financial aid.

“By all reports, Russia’s recent withdrawal to north-eastern Ukraine was the largest military defeat since Russian troops withdrew from areas near Kyiv more than five months ago, and I am here to confirm that support from the US and others Allies has worked and that we must help maintain that momentum,” the senator said in a statement.

“This dramatic shift in momentum for Ukraine has been fueled by our bipartisan work in Congress, and I intend to continue this in the upcoming budget, which we will vote on next week.

“I will push to add at least $12 billion in aid to Ukraine to the budget and I expect we will have the bipartisan support to pull it off.”

Throughout the war, US financial support for Kyiv was approved by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with only some GOP members of Congress expressing opposition. The new round of funding would send more weapons and humanitarian aid, Schumer’s office noted.

“We saw as Ukraine gained ground that Russian forces were ruthless and ruthless,” Schumer said.

“Mass graves, attacks on civilians and other unspeakable acts underscore the importance of aid like this and how it is truly helping to make a difference on the ground so that innocent lives can be saved.”

“The people of Ukraine are defending their homeland and fighting for their future with admirable courage and determination,” said Foreign Minister Antony Blinken at the time.
