RIO FERDINAND and Paul Scholes believe Manchester United would still be in the Champions League if Diego Simeone were manager.
And both believe United are in dire need of an elite manager like the Argentine.
In fact, Ferdinand argues that the Red Devils wouldn’t be successful without such a manager, even if they sign two of the best players in the world this summer – Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
Ferdinand slammed United as a team of individuals, arguing that was the difference between them and Atlético in the 0-1 defeat.
He said of BT Sport’s post-match coverage: “Atletico have a manager who can put a team in place to get the job done.
“It’s all about the team. The season is over for Man United. It really was a reflection of what the season was like. They looked good at moments, but they’re Jekyll and Hyde moments. You see the good, the bad, and the ugly We haven’t seen enough quality.
“The difference between the teams was that Atletico had a group of reliable men who did whatever the coach asked of them and worked together.
“While the other team (United) looks and says, ‘Who’s going to pull us out of this, the magic trick out of the hat?’
“It’s not about the team getting through, it’s about the individual.
“If you bring in Mbappe and Haaland this summer, United will not win the league. It doesn’t matter who they pick. The revision needs to be top-down.”

Scholes agreed with his former teammate but suggested Ralf Rangnick should never have gotten the manager’s job.
He also thinks there will be more painful nights to come United before fighting over silverware again.
And he reiterated his position that United needed a tough disciplinary officer who won’t take nonsense from the players – someone in the shape of Sir Alex Ferguson like Antonio Conte or Thomas Tuchel.
Scholes added: “They (Atletico) are not a better team than Man United but they have a better manager, a more experienced manager who knows how to get results. If he coached Man United then they go through.
“How this manager got the job six weeks, six months, six games I don’t know.
“We’ve had a lot of pain and I think there’s still a little bit more before we get where we want to be.
“But until we have a proper high-level elite coach who instills fear in the players, it can take two, three or four years to challenge them.
“There’s no sign of getting any closer, it feels like it’s going in the opposite direction.”
