The boy came home from school that day to find his cousin cleaning an apartment that reeked of bleach, according to Clerkin. After a week – when Barrow used Walcott’s credit card and continued to impersonate her via text messages – family members realized the cousin had her phone and reported her missing, Clerkin alleges.

Barrow allegedly continued the ruse for days, even when his loved ones were suspicious. At one point, Walcott’s son received a purported message from his mother instructing him not to tell an uncle what was going on, according to court records.

Police surveillance from Walcott’s apartment building showed a man believed to be Barrow and his co-conspirator carrying a trash can out of the building just after 1 a.m. Friday and driving it to the Bronx in a taxi and car SUV licensed by the Limousine Commission, prosecutors said.

“Surveillance video shows him in Mrs. Walcott’s building with another person pulling a clear plastic container down from the roof, in the elevator in the lobby, and out of the building,” Assistant Solicitors Manhattan District Elizabeth Clerkin said. “About an hour later, Bronx surveillance video captured the defendant removing the crate from a car in the Bronx, where he dragged it onto the sidewalk and left it.”

Judge James Burke ordered Barrow’s detention without bail on Sunday after a brief arrangement, which the suspect did not say. He was charged with second-degree murder and three counts of concealing a body.

His next court date is March 4.

Walcott and Barrow’s family and friends – including a man who stuck his finger in his ear when prosecutors described Walcott’s injuries – refused to speak outside the courtroom.

“This is crazy,” said a man who identified himself as a cousin.
