Saying Yes: Harris County Clerk’s Office issues millionth marriage certificate

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — As more people get married in Harris County, a couple marked a milestone for the clerk’s office in June when it issued its millionth marriage license.

According to the county, June is a popular month for weddings.

“On average, our office issues about 2,500 marriage certificates each month,” said Teneshia Hudspeth, a Harris County clerk. “Some couples even choose to get married on the same day, which means finding a judge who waives the 72-hour wait.”

The one millionth marriage certificate was issued on June 22nd to Mr. and Mrs. Marcelo Pestana, who married on the same day.

In 2019, HCCO issued nearly 32,000 marriage certificates; However, that number has fallen by half in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the County Clerk’s Office. But in 2021, the clerk’s office recorded a surge in marriage certificates to more than 28,000 after the rollout of vaccines and restrictions were lifted. And this year the office issued more than 151,000 marriage certificates.
