Salman Rushdie’s ex-wife Padma Lakshmi said Sunday the author is “coming through” after he was stabbed multiple times on Friday.
“Relieved @SalmanRushdie comes through after Friday’s nightmare. Worried and wordless, can finally breathe easy. Now we hope for a speedy recovery,” said Lakshmi, host of Bravo’s Top Chef. wrote on Twitter.
Rushdie was off a ventilator on Saturday and in good spirits, a day after he was stabbed while preparing to give a lecture in Chautauqua state, his agent confirmed.
The harrowing and shocking attack left Rushdie in a serious condition, according to his agent Andrew Wylie, who said the author of The Satanic Verses is likely to lose an eye.
The author also suffered a damaged liver and severed nerves in his arm, the agent said.
The alleged assailant, Hadi Matar, 24, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges for the public attack on a non-profit education and retreat center.
Prosecutors said Matar planned the stabbing in advance and used fake ID to obtain an advance pass to Rushdie’s lecture.
Matar, of Fairview, NJ, harbored sympathies for Iran, law enforcement officials told the Post.
In 1989, Iran’s uncompromising leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa, or religious edict, demanding the death of the British-Indian writer following the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses. Khomeini died later that year, but Rushdie remained in hiding for about the next decade, until the Iranian government denounced the death sentence. However, the fatwa was never revoked.
Lakshmi and Rushdie have lived together since 1999 and were married from 2004 to 2007.
