SAG Awards: Michael Keaton almost missed his award due to bathroom break

Michael Keaton almost received the SAG Award for his performance in Dopesick due to a long line in the men’s room.

The 70-year-old actor, who won Best Actor in a Drama or Series, kept award presenter Salma Hayek waiting for several minutes before appearing on stage.

“Are you kidding me? I have stage fright,” Hayek joked, as soon as she spotted Keaton jogging past the audience. “Come on Michael, come on Michael.”

In his hurry, Keaton avoided taking the stairs and instead jumped up and rolled across the stage in a makeshift somersault to get there quickly.

“Thank you very much,” Spiderman the actor said, after finally receiving the award from Hayek. “Sorry, hurry to the men’s room. By the way, it was packed. “

In his acceptance speech, Keaton praised the Ukrainian president and “co-star” Volodymyr Zelensky for “fighting hard.” He also talked about the “privilege” that allowed him to become an actor.

“I’m so lucky. We could spend a week here talking about how lucky I am, and I know you all will love it,” Keaton said. “Everybody wants to hear Mike rambling for a few hours.”

“I’m so lucky to be doing what I do, and so lucky. I have a job where I can be a part of production like Dopesick, that can really create thought, conversation, change reality. Who will have that job? How lucky am I that good can come from what I do just because I want to be an actor? ” he added.

Keaton also spoke of “huge inequality” in the world.

“In Dopesick, When you talk about addiction, the way to heal the problem is to accept that you have a problem. Not our country – the whole world,” he said. “Economically, racially, socially, financially. There is great inequality in the world. Only that. There is fair, and there is no fair. There’s not much room in between. “

He then paid a touching tribute to his nephew, Michael, who died of fentanyl and heroin use at the age of 30, by dedicating his award to him.

“With the theme, this is for my nephew, Michael, and my sister, Pam,” he said. “I lost my grandson Michael to drugs, and it was heartbreaking. To my sister Pam, thanks. ”
