The Ohio State football team will today sit at home instead of playing for the Big Ten Championship. They are sitting at home because they lost to TTUN in a game that was not really close. It was just the beginning of Ryan Day’s worst week of his career as a head coach.
After the loss, things continued to snowball at him and they didn’t stop. He lost the opportunity to hire Marcus Freeman as defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach at Notre Dame. Now a pair of players have entered the transfer portal.
We knew Jack Miller was going to transfer, so it wasn’t a huge shock. What is a strong blow Quinn Ewers left after only a year. The day lost the best recruiter in the history of the program. It was a huge blow for the team, even if CJ Stroud is expected to begin in the next two years.
Today we also learned that Craig Young decided to enter the remittance portal. That’s three transfers from the program in less than a week, and two from the same set of locations. It’s not an ideal week right after you lose to your opponent.
How Day reacts to this week will define the rest of Ohio State’s football coaching career. He can either fall apart and let himself become a worse version of Larry Coker, or he can stand up and face adversity and come out this week stronger.
Only time will tell how Day and the rest of the Buckeyes handle this week. We will find out as soon as the bowl game, whenever there is. It will be the first test of how Day reacts to the transfer boom and backlash from losing to TTUN. I can’t wait to see how he responds.
