Russians flee as Ukrainian troops make ‘amazing’ advances in east

Ukrainian forces gained control of a vital Russian supply hub in the east of the country – part of their shock counteroffensive to retake areas Moscow lost after February’s invasion.

According to reports, Ukrainian special forces have posted photos on social media showing their officers in the city of Kupyansk, a vital supply center for Russian troops.

The gains could mark a crucial turning point in the Ukraine conflict, analysts said.

The Kupyansk rail and road hub in the western half of the city was the last major artery connecting Russia with thousands of troops, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“Ukrainian troops are advancing in eastern Ukraine and are liberating more towns and villages,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko in a statement on social media. “Your courage coupled with Western military support brings amazing results,”

“It is crucial to keep sending arms to Ukraine. Defeating Russia on the battlefield means winning peace in Ukraine,” he added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced late Friday that his forces had retaken about 30 towns and villages in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

“In some villages of the region, measures to check and secure the territory continue, we gradually take new settlements under our control – we return the Ukrainian flag and protection for our people everywhere,” he said in a social media outlet -Contribution .

Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in the east of the country earlier this week, as well as an attack in the south in a bid to retake the Russian-held Kherson region.
