A Russian bomb today destroyed a theater in the besieged city of Mariupol where 1,200 terrified civilians have taken shelter, officials said.
The Mariupol Drama Theater was used as a central meeting place where meals were provided and people slept overnight.
Mariupol was continuously shelled – forcing about 20,000 people Ukrainians to get out of the besieged city, while it is estimated that more than 2,300 citizens were killed in the area.
The city’s deputy mayor Serhiy Orlov said there were between 1,000 and 1,200 people in the theater.
Rescuers search the wreck for survivors, the number of victims is not yet known.
Shocking footage showed the aftermath of the strike, with a huge section of the building decimated by the bomb.
Another video showed smoldering vehicles and debris strewn across the theater’s parking lot.
Footage posted online just five days ago showed the theater full of people.
Mariupol has been under shelling for more than two weeks, and local officials estimate that more than 2,300 people were killed in the siege.
Putin’s troops have taken hundreds of hospital staff and patients hostage in the Mariupol Regional Intensive Care Hospital.
The soldiers are then supposed to force residents out of their homes and into the hospital Days of relentless Russian shelling.
Mr Orlov said about 400 people are being prevented from leaving the city center hospital.
He told the BBC: “We have received information that the Russian army has captured our largest hospital… and they are using our patients and doctors like hostages.
“We can confirm this information, and the governor of Donetsk region has also confirmed this information. We received information that there are 400 people there.”
The Russian soldiers reportedly threatened to shoot anyone who tried to escape.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Mariupol is rapidly running out of food and residents are fighting for water, heating and medicines.
And Iryna Vereshchuk, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, said there were serious problems getting humanitarian aid to the desperate city of 430,000.
She said a convoy filled with supplies got stuck in nearby Berdyansk.
In a glimmer of hope, around 20,000 people have managed to flee the city by traveling down a humanitarian corridor agreed with Russian forces.
According to Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a senior Zelenskyy aide, about 4,000 cars fled northwest to Zaporizhia in what is believed to be the largest evacuation from Mariupol.

Amid frantic scenes as families try to flee, a devastating image from the city’s hospital number three shows three premature babies in a bed – abandoned by their distraught parents.
It comes after a pregnant woman and her unborn child died after a Russian airstrike destroyed a maternity hospital in Mariupol.
A shocking picture showed the mother being stretcher from the hospital and she later screamed “Kill me, kill me” upon realizing her baby was lost – and then died herself.
Elsewhere, at least 10 people have reportedly died following Russian troops opened fire on Ukrainian civilians queuing for bread in the northern city of Chernihiv.
