Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani underwent cardiac stent surgery Tuesday to open two clogged arteries, his son Andrew and radio partner Maria Ryan said.
Giuliani, 78, had spent weeks feverishly campaigning across the state for his son Andrew Giuliani’s candidacy for governor, which ended in the main loss to Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-LI) last week.
“There was a bit of fear in the Giuliani family,” Andrew said while replacing his father on Rudy’s show on 77 WABC radio.
Ryan said Giuliani had two stents put in to open his arteries.
Rudy was sweating and short of breath but stayed on the campaign trail because “he loves you so much,” Ryan told Andrew.
“It shows how much he loves this city, this state and this country,” Andrew said. “He’s ready to go campaigning again. He needs to take it a little easier.”
Andrew Giuliani told the Post that his father had been unwell for a few weeks but wouldn’t tell anyone before elementary school, calling his father “iron man” and “tough as nails.”
Papa Giuliani has been at the center of controversy in the final days of the Republican primary.
Rudy was chatting with locals at ShopRite in Staten Island on June 26 when a store clerk, Daniel Gill, came up behind him, slapped him on the back and unleashed a verbal tirade, video of the incident shows.
Gill, 39, was initially arrested and charged with second-degree assault – although the charges were reduced.
The incident provoked a feud between Mayor Eric Adams and the elder Giuliani.
Adams accused Giuliani of filing a false report after seeing the video, to which Giuliani responded that Adams should resign because he was a failed mayor. Other witnesses said the worker hit Giuliani.
“Eric Adams calling Rudy Giuliani would be a good thing,” Andrew said.
Giuliani served as mayor from 1994 to 2001 and earned the nickname “America’s Mayor” because he oversaw the city after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
A former federal prosecutor, he has acted as counsel for former President Donald Trump for the past several years, alleging that the 2002 election was stolen from the former president. The courts have debunked the claims and the NY Bar Association temporarily suspended his legal license for making “false and misleading” statements about voter fraud.
