Rudy Giuliani attacked ShopRite on Staten Island

Rudy Giuliani was attacked by a worker at a Staten Island ShopRite on Sunday while campaigning for his son, leaving the 78-year-old former mayor of New York City shaken, witnesses and law enforcement sources said.

Giuliani told the Post he nearly fell to the ground when he was hit, but regained his composure – even as his attacker kept swearing at him.

“My dad is badass,” said Giuliani’s gubernatorial nominee son, Andrew Giuliani.

Witness Rita Rugova-Johnson told the Post she was “stunned” during the attack on the Veterans Road supermarket.

“At ShopRite, I stood shoulder to shoulder with Rudy,” said Rugova-Johnson. “We’re talking, and suddenly an employee came out of nowhere and smacked him on the back with an open hand and said, ‘Hey, what’s this bastard?’

“[The attacker] was on duty at the time,” the witness said. “The police arrested him.”

According to sources, the police took the attacker into custody at the store.

The suspect, a 39-year-old from Staten Island, is charged with second-degree assault involving a person over the age of 65, law enforcement sources said. The man has no previous arrests, sources said.

Police were called to the supermarket just before 3:30 p.m., sources said.

Rudy Giuliani
A witness told the Post that Rudy Giuliani was attacked by a supermarket worker.

It’s unclear if the former mayor sought medical advice after the attack.

“He’s fine,” Andrew later said of his father. “But it’s a sad day when New York’s number one crime fighter, ‘America’s Mayor,’ is under attack. I accuse the left of promoting violence. That’s crazy.”

He said his father was in good spirits and even quipped, “I met the only person who didn’t vote for Andrew Giuliani.”

“‘I feel fine,'” his father assured him.

Rudy Giuliani, also an attorney for former President Donald Trump, was standing up for his son at the time of the attack, including by posing for photos, his partner Dr. Maria Ryan to The Post.

The younger Giuliani is seeking the Republican nomination for governor of New York, running in the primary against Long Island Assemblyman Lee Zeldin, former Westchester County executive Rob Astorino, and businessman Harry Wilson.

“Rudy was attacked,” Ryan said. “He’s a 78-year-old man with a broken back and broken knees.”
