Rose Parade 2022: New Year’s Day Tradition takes place in Pasadena despite COVID-19 spike

The 133rd edition of Pasadena, California, traditionally features actor LeVar Burton as the grand marshal, 20 marching bands, 18 equestrian units, and dozens of floats reflecting the theme of “Dream. Believe. . Achievement.”
After days of torrential rain, the sunny skies at 8 a.m. begin the parade, which has a strange history of postcard weather.
LeAnn Rimes started the event with a performance of “Throw my bracelet around the world”, followed by a demonstration of the army’s B-2 bomber. Also on the list are “American Idol” winner Laine Hardy aboard Louisiana’s “Feed Your Soul” and country singer-songwriter Jimmie Allen.
The afternoon Rose Bowl parade and soccer game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Utah Utes remained on track despite the outbreak of COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County, which has seen 27,000 new cases daily as of Friday.
The county’s Department of Public Health says it’s home to the highest number of new cases.
The spike in infections prompted Kaiser Permanente to announce that its float, “A Healthier Future,” would not have 20 “frontline medical heroes” riding or walking with.
The healthcare network said: “We must prioritize the health and safety of frontline healthcare workers and ensure we can treat patients during the recent outbreak of COVID-19 cases- 19 caused by the omicron variant,” said the healthcare network.
The parade draws thousands of fans as usual along its 5.5-mile (8.8 km) route. Many people camped out on the sidewalks overnight, zoning out their spots on New Year’s Eve afternoon.
The Pasadena government urges people to wear masks, upgrade to N95 or KN95 types, and avoid socializing with anyone outside of their group.
The Rose Association said those purchasing tickets for the Rose Bowl parade and game will be required to present proof of full vaccinations or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours and masks will be provided. required for everyone 2 years of age and older.
The 2021 Rose Parade has been canceled several months ahead of schedule. The Rose Bowl football game was played after being moved to Arlington, Texas.
Before that, the parade was canceled for several years during World War II, and the 1942 Rose Bowl game was played in North Carolina after the Pearl Harbor attack.
