Robert and Ghislaine Maxwell would converse on the phone by “meowing” each other.

A former secretary to disgraced British press baron Robert Maxwell has described a bizarre phone call she overheard between the tycoon and his daughter Ghislaine Maxwell, who was recently convicted of sex trafficking offences, during which the two meowed at each other like cats.

Former Mirror Group secretary Carol Bragoli opened up about the exchange, which took place over the speakerphone during the mogul’s tenure as Red Top newspaper owner in the 1980s, in the first episode of the BBC’s new three-part documentary series House Maxwell.

“One day the front desk called and said ‘This is Ghislaine,'” Ms Bargoli recalled. “And he said ‘put them on’ and the next thing I heard was ‘meow’ and he went ‘meow meow’ and she said ‘meow’.

“This went on like ten times until he suddenly said, ‘What are you doing?’ and she said ‘nothing’ and I thought ‘yeah that’s right’.

“He definitely had a different relationship with Ghislaine than with the others.”

At the time, Ghislaine Maxwell – the youngest of nine children – was at Oxford University, where she attended Balliol College, studying modern history with languages.

After graduating, she became a principal at Oxford United before moving to New York City in the early 1990s to support her father’s business interests across the Atlantic.

There she became a fixture on the Big Apple social scene, meeting and befriending billionaire ex-Bear Sterns dealer and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and later helping him find underage girls for sex at his luxury New York, Florida properties , to procure and maintain Little St. James in the US Virgin Islands.

Also included in the show was an insight into Robert Maxwell’s relationship with his daughter and her siblings sunday mirror Editor Eve Pollard who said: “He was very fond of Ian and Kevin and Ghislaine. It was the kind of love that could grab you by the throat as well as your heart, and you never knew which way it would go.”

Ms Pollard recalled that Mr Maxwell pressured her into giving young Ghislaine a job, prompting her to tell him: “I run a newspaper and I don’t think she wants to be a journalist.”

She said of Mrs Maxwell: “She was very beautiful when she was young and she was smart. They always say she’s his favorite child.”

But she also recalled her former boss’s apparent reluctance to spend time with his family at their mansion at Headington Hall in Oxford.

“Bob often barely went home at the weekend, or he would go home for an hour or two or half a day and then come back The Sunday Mirror on a Saturday evening. You’d think he would stay in this beautiful house with his kids,” she said.

“And that would have been pretty hard at times, I mean, you want your dad to be such a lovely, easygoing dad who loves you unconditionally.”

In November 1991, Robert Maxwell mysteriously disappeared from the deck of his luxury yacht – the Lady Ghislaine, named after his daughter – off the Canary Islands. His body was later found floating in the sea.

Whether he jumped, fell, or was pushed has never been determined.
