Robbie Williams sells two Banksy pieces for millions at auction

Robbie Williams has successfully auctioned off two Banksy pieces for a total of £7million.

The singer suggested versions of the pieces kiss copper, girl with balloon and Vandalized Oils (Choppers) from his private collection for auction in January.

The auction house Sotheby’s auctioned off two of the works on Wednesday (March 2nd).

Vandalized Oils (Choppers), which is said to contain an “anti-war” message, cost just under £4.4million. The original estimate was between £2.5m and £3.5m.

girl with balloon fetched £2.8m after being priced at £2-3m.

Williams first purchased the painting directly from Banksy in 2006. However, the graffitied image made its debut under Waterloo Bridge in London in 2002.

Both recently sold pieces are among the anonymous street artist’s best-known works.

girl with balloon is particularly famous as a canvas version of the play was shredded at auction in 2018 immediately after it sold for £1million.

“These works bring together the cultural legacies of two of Britain’s biggest stars: Robbie Williams and Banksy,” said Sotheby’s Hugo Cobb at the time of their first auction listing earlier this year.

“Like their creator and like their owner, they are bitter, iconic, irreverent and unique.”
