Family Values rapper Riky Rick revealed he suffered from chronic depression in the years leading up to his death while dealing with the loss of his father.
In previous interviews, the South African musician has talked about struggling with alcohol, turning to therapy, and feeling a longing for acceptance.
His family today confirmed the 34-year-old man’s sudden death today.
Riky Rick, whose real name is Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, said he has turned to therapy over the past few years to help process his father’s death.
In September 2020, he said he found himself on a “destructive path” while suffering from “chronic depression”.
He said: “I lost my father at a time when I needed help. I lost him at a time when I needed that voice.
“A lot of people don’t understand that you can never replace a father’s voice.
“It’s not like he just died, it’s more like 18 years, living with your father for a year, and then coming back to your mother.
“I like to stay with my mother but live with him for a year… A child is never meant to live without his or her parents.”
Riky said he’s faced with an emotional roller coaster trying to combine feelings of grief, heartbreak, and anger.
He said: “When he passed away, I was very angry, very sad. I was very upset, like ‘why my life?
“Why does my life have to be turned around when all the kids that I go to school with have both parents coming to see them at the football game, going to see them at the basketball game, carrying backpacks? foreign?
“I don’t understand that and I won’t see you later’. I was very angry, very angry, very angry.”
When he shared the clip on Instagram, he told his followers: “After losing a loved one, sometimes we go to a dark place.
“I’ve been there and back to tell some stories to anyone who might be involved. Not everyone. Anyone.”

Before that, he detailed his problems with alcohol and sought help to deal with the challenges he was facing.
In an interview in 2015, Riky said he is the type of person with symptoms of personal trouble.

He leaves behind his wife Bianca Naidoo, two children, a mother, and five siblings.
The 34-year-old’s cause of death has not yet been released.
