Rice Owls Baseball Team: Jose Cruz, Jr. brings a “family” atmosphere to the Rice baseball show with his father, Jose Cruz, by his side

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Jose Cruz Jr is taking on the position of head coach of Rice University’s baseball team.

Former major league baseball players are no strangers to the Owls program. He is a player for the Rice Owls, a member of the baseball booster club, and the parent of the Owls. He comes from one of the most famous baseball families in Houston – the Cruz family.

Some teams preach about family, at Rice baseball – they live it. No family is more synonymous with the baseball Owls than the Cruz family.

“Our family is so happy to be here together,” said Jose Cruz Jr.

Cruz Jr is taking over as head coach with his father, Jose Cruz, at his side. Astros fans may know him as an MLB quarterback during his 19-year career.

“I have to raise my son. I’ve supported Rice for a long time. I’m happy to be back as a special assistant to the head coach. I’m happy about it, but it’s only voluntary.” . Cruz Sr. said. “I appreciate his eyes and what he’s seeing. All he cares about is having a parking pass to park in the right spot.”

Cruz Jr played and graduated from Rice University. His brother, Enrique Cruz, was the 2003 World University Champion with Owl. Junior’s son, Trei Cruz, is an Owls fallback drafted by the Tigers in 2020.

Antonio Cruz, another son of Cruz Jr., is now a quarterback on Rice’s roster. There is no one better to run the show than someone who has lived Rice baseball every day and every way.

“I’m already a parent and have paid tuition. I’m a member of the booster club. My wife is also one of the moms on the team here. For most boys, it’s an opportunity to get better, broaden your horizons. So explain that as a player, ex-player and parent, it’s very valuable.” Cruz Jr. said.

On the field, Cruz Jr said the Owls are hungry to learn. So he will draw on his lifelong experience in baseball and use every available resource to the owls’ advantage.

“We’re going to play in a more modern style of baseball. We’re doing things in a very advanced way,” Cruz Jr., said.

The Rice Pitching Lab is an example of a modern game approach.

Cruz Jr. “There’s a little more data available to you. I think that’s a career-changer for a lot of people. They can tell what they’re doing right and wrong,” said.

The Owls opened the season with a weekend series in Texas starting February 18.
