Rep. Cawthorn subpoenaed for gun possession at Charlotte airport

CHARLOTTE, NC (WNCN) – Rep. Madison Cawthron was subpoenaed Tuesday for possession of a gun at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police confirmed the Republican congressman had a gun in his pocket at the airport.
CMPD said Cawthorn was “cooperative” with officers after TSA agents discovered the firearm.
Cawthorn was subpoenaed for possession of a dangerous weapon on city property and released.
“It is standard procedure for the CMPD airport department to seek charges of possession of a dangerous weapon on city property in lieu of arrest for the misdemeanor, unless there are other related offenses or extenuating circumstances.” CMPD said in a tweet.
TSA confirmed to CBS 17 that a 9mm handgun was discovered at Checkpoint D, but would not identify the passenger who had the gun.

This isn’t the first time Cawthorn has been caught with a gun in an airport.
In February 2021, Cawthorn had a loaded 9mm at Asheville Regional Airport.
Cawthorn was not charged with a felony in the February 2021 incident.
