Reno Air Race pilot dead after plane crashes in flames

One person was killed when a plane went down in a fiery crash during a race at an annual air race in Nevada Sunday afternoon.

The single-engine plane crashed onto the field during the championship round on the final day of the Reno Air Races and burst into flames, officials and videos from the scene said.

The plane crashed at outer pylon 5 around 3:45 p.m. local time on lap three of six during the Jet Gold Race, said Fred Telling, CEO and president of the Reno Air Racing Association, at a news conference recorded by KRNV.

Officials did not release the name of the deceased pilot but offered their condolences to the family and onlookers who witnessed the crash.

A live stream of the air races captured the moment of the fatal crash and the stream went dead shortly after. The video has since been removed from the Reno Air Races YouTube page.

No other planes were involved and no one was hurt, Telling said.
