Remembrance: Family and friends of the man killed in an 18 wheel tire crash on Friday release the balloon

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — The family and loved ones of a man killed in a bizarre accident on I-45 near Louetta, Harris County are seeking accountability and justice.

Lee Simmons, 32, died after an 18-wheel car lost two of its wheels in the middle of Interstate 45 in northern Harris County. The incident happened around 1:35 p.m. Thursday on the 20700 block of the North Freeway near Louetta.

The semi-truck was traveling south on the North Freeway when two tires on the left side detached and rolled into the main lanes, Sheriff Gonzalez said.

A wheel went off the access road and hit a vehicle, which sustained only minor damage.

The second wheel crashed over the center wall and into the lanes of the northbound freeway. It then hit the windshield of another car, hitting the Simmons and shearing off the vehicle’s roof. In the car with Simmons was his 11-year-old son who suffered minor injuries.

“I can’t believe we lost him because of the truck’s neglect. We are lost without him. We will miss him,” said the victim’s wife, Christina Simmons.

In tears, people who loved him gathered to release balloons in his honor on Saturday afternoon.

“He was a very good husband. A very great father. And a man who goes to church,” said Simmons’ wife.

Hand in hand with his mother, the 11-year-old, who was in the car with his father and miraculously survived, was also present at the balloon launch in honor of his father.

“He’s traumatized. It’s very difficult for him,” said Christina.

The only thing the family wants is justice for the beloved father.

How the incident happened is currently being investigated.

“We must re-emphasize the safety of trucks traveling on Houston city streets and on the freeways, and we want motorists to feel safe on the road. And so we need some reforms, we definitely need some reforms,” said Anjanette Wyatt, a family member.

The family doesn’t want the father’s death to be in vain. They want to be held accountable and make sure this never happens again.

There is a GoFundMe account set up to help the grieving family.
