Regis Philbin has a beloved brother that he never mentioned in public while he was still alive

Many fans of the late “Live” host Regis Philbin may be surprised to learn he has a younger brother who chose to keep his life private. However, Philbin did share details of his life after his death in 2007.

Regis Philbin became the face of American daytime television when he began co-hosting “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee” in 1989. Then in 2001, Kelly Ripa replaced Kathie Lee Gifford, and the show became “Live with Regis and Kelly”.

His first big break came in the early ’60s on “The Joey Bishop Show” as Bishop’s sidekick. He also hosted ABC’s hit show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” which ushered in a new wave of reality shows and games for American television.

Regis Philbin has undergone many surgeries

The TV show legend has a history of health and medical problems. In 2007, he underwent triple surgery. Six weeks after surgery, he returned to TV, and he speak of surgery and recovery:

They say, “The rewards are great at the end of it. They add that they add years to your life. But in the meantime, it’s a tough one.”

Two years later, in 2009, Philbin experienced hip replacement surgery at the end of November. At the time, Today reported that the surgery went perfectly, and his doctor said Philbin couldn’t have been in better shape.

An email sent from “Live with Regis and Kelly” said the typical recovery time is four to six months, and Philbin hopes to return to his daytime talk show early next year.

Unfortunately, the hip replacement resulted in a medical complication when Philbin developed a blood clot in his calf, which he had removed in the first half of 2010.

On an episode of the show, he explained that after a hip replacement, a person has to keep walking, but he can’t walk for long periods of time because of the pain caused by the blood clot.

The secret brother that he loves but can’t talk about

Many fans of the late TV presenter may not know Philbin has a younger brother, Frank, 20 years younger than him. Because of the big age gap, the two brothers were not able to grow up together.

While Philbin was in Hollywood to make a name for himself in the showbiz, Frank was in school. Frank didn’t follow in his brother’s entertainment footsteps and lived a private life instead.

Despite the age gap, the two brothers have a pretty close relationship. Philbin served as one of the finest men at Frank’s wedding to his wife, Cathy

Philbin rarely mentions his younger brother on TV because he is a “private guy”, and Philbin respects his wishes. However, he used to

remember

a moment when he talked about his brother in public:

“…when I was working in Hollywood, I mentioned that he was a pilot in the Air Force, a captain. Oh man, am I chewed. He said, ‘Please, I don’t want to be mentioned.’ “

Frank was a pilot in the Air Force for seven years. He then worked as a pilot for Delta Air Lines for 25 years. He developed his passion for flying after his brother’s retired maritime friend put him on board the Piper Cub when he was 11 years old.

Cherish the memory of my brother forever

Frank died in 2007 after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Philbin shared that the doctor said it was incurable; however, they tried everything to help him live longer, including chemotherapy and stem cell therapies.

Philbin first noticed something was wrong with his brother two and a half years earlier during a trip to Chicago. He shared that his brother doesn’t look what he usually does:

“He’s always had a manly look and he looks different to me. I said, ‘Frank, is everything okay?” He said, “Yes, everything is fine. I have some pain in my neck and lower back.” “

A few weeks later, Frank was diagnosed with cancer and later died. His death was a shock to his family Philbin

, “it’s one of those things that’s hard to explain.” He is only 55 years old.

After his death, Philbin revealed on his TV show that he was cherishing his brother’s memory as he kept a photo of Frank and his wife. He joked that he hopes his younger brother won’t be afraid to show it off because he’s a private person.

Philbin left “Live with Regis and Kelly” in 2011 after 23 years on the air. He was replaced by former footballer Michael Strahan, and Ryan Seacrest took over in 2017.

Nine years later, on July 24, 2020, Philbin died of natural causes at the age of 88, a month before his 89th birthday. His family

his death to People in a statement:

“His family and friends are forever grateful for the time we spent with him… We thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support. in his 60-year career…”

USA Today later reported that Linda Silvia from the main medical examiner’s office in Farmington, Connecticut, disclosure His cause of death was “myocardial infarction due to coronary artery disease and hypertension.”

Philbin leaves behind his wife Joy and their children, Daniel, Joanna, JJ and Amy. Joy and Philbin were

for 50 years and welcome daughters, Joanna and JJ

Their two daughters are both accomplished writers. Joanna has written four novels for teenagers. While JJ is the writer and producer of the TV shows for “New Girl,” “The OC,” and “Single Father.”

Philbin welcomed his two other children, Daniel and Amy, in his first marriage to Catherine “Kay” Faylen. He became a father for the first time in 1961 when Amy was born. Daniel was born in 1967.

Not much is known about Amy. However, Closer Weekly said she followed a

singing career

. Sadly, Philbin’s only son passed away in 2014. He enjoyed a successful career in the Department of Defense workforce.

Regis Philbin will never be forgotten

Without a doubt, Philbin’s legacy lives on in his children and his wife. He will never be forgotten by family, friends, and the many colleagues with whom he has shared the TV screen throughout his career.

After his death, many former colleagues shared touching words of gratitude for him. At the 2021 Daytime Emmy Awards, Gifford paid her respects to Philbin during the beginning of the Memoriam segment. She speak:

“For 15 years, it has been my absolute joy and pleasure as well as the honor and privilege of sitting next to someone you can remember.

Gifford

said she learned from him and enjoyed the company and his talents as a friend and co-host. She notes that people will miss him, and that she would never be the same without him.

Ripa also paid tribute to Philbin on an episode of “Live With Kelly and Ryan.” She commented that it is inevitable that a person dies as they age. However, everyone hopes Philbin will find a way to deal with the inevitable problem.
