RDU Airport prepares for crowds ahead of the 4th of July weekend

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – Raleigh Durham International Airport is preparing for an increase in travelers for the 4th of July weekend.

They expect 182,000 passengers to pass through the airport between June 30thth and July 4th.

“That number is about 17% higher than the same weekend last year and about 7% lower than the same weekend in pre-pandemic 2019,” said Crystal Feldman, RDU’s vice president of communications.

Thursday, the busiest travel day of the 4th of July weekend, with an expected 40,000 passengers passing through the airport.

RDU say they expect around 39,000 passengers for Friday July 1st.

“We’ll be out here until July 4th. We have a family reunion out here every two years,” said Robert Parris.

Delays and cancellations are a big problem as airlines cancel holiday flights due to staff shortages.

“One of my buddies had his flight canceled today so he immediately opened the Delta app and I was like oh I checked my flight but it hasn’t been a problem so far, knock wood,” said Alex Scheer.

An increase in travelers could mean longer queues at the airport.

Ahead of the holidays, RDU unveiled new CT scanners at security checkpoints.

“Adding computed tomography screening technology at security checkpoints is a win-win for TSA passengers,” said Jennifer Gordon, TSA Federal Security Director at RDU. “We’re getting an improved screening capacity that will result in fewer bag checks, and passengers will be able to leave 3-1-1 compliant electronic liquids in their bags when passing through the checkpoint.”

Heather Laughter told CBS 17 that she hopes the new technology will help her get through the lines faster.

“I carry both a laptop and an iPad, and then with shoes and everything else, it’s pretty annoying,” Laughter said.

RDU also added two new lanes to the Terminal 2 checkpoint. It is one of the first construction projects to resume after the pandemic.

The airport says if you’re planning to fly this weekend, the best thing you can do to avoid long lines is to get to the airport early.
