Rapper Mystikal accused of rape and false imprisonment in recent legal troubles

Rapper Mystikal was arrested in Louisiana on Monday for rape and false imprisonment – the latest troubling allegations against the artist.

Michael “Mystikal” Tyler, 51, was arrested on charges of first-degree rape, robbery, false imprisonment, domestic assault and strangulation, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana.

The sheriff’s department said detectives questioned a victim just before midnight Saturday night.

According to the authorities, the victim suffered minor injuries in the alleged attack.

“Further investigation has identified Michael ‘Mystikal’ Tyler as a suspect,” the sheriff’s office said.

The hip-hop star faces a life sentence if convicted of rape. He was held without bail.

Mystikal was only charged in 2017 with an alleged sexual assault over an incident at a Shreveport casino the previous year. After serving 18 months in prison, he finally posted $3 million bail in February 2019.

Prosecutors then dropped the rape and kidnapping charges against him in December 2020. This decision was made after new information was presented to a grand jury, which opted not to seek new charges.

In 2003, the New Orleans native was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assault. In this case, the victim – his hairstylist at the time – accused him of forcing her to perform sexual acts on him and his two bodyguards in retaliation for allegedly cashing tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized checks from his account.

After the charges were dropped in 2017, he seemed intent on avoiding future legal turmoil. He told the Associated Press in April 2021 he wanted to put behind his past, which landed him in a “horrible fraternity.”

“Looking back and listening to the music, man — I was a nasty little rapper!” he said in 2021. “A lot of my music now, I imagine myself rapping it to God, and if I can rap it, am.” I proud.”

Attorney Joel Pearce, who represented Mystikal in the 2017 indictments, said he expects “large bail” to be posted against the rapper this time. The attorney has not yet been engaged in this case to represent Mystikal, a registered sex offender, although the two are scheduled to meet later this week.

Mystikal’s musical career peaked in 2000 when his hit single “Shake (it Fast)” reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and his 2000 album “Let’s Get Ready” went multiplatinum.
