Queen saw The Crown, Prince Harry called me Grandad

The Crown star Matt Smith revealed that Queen Elizabeth II – who died on September 8 at the age of 96 – had actually watched the Netflix royal family drama.

The British actor, who portrayed the monarch’s late husband Prince Philip in seasons 1 and 2, shared how she viewed the show.

“I heard the Queen saw it,” the 39-year-old House of the Dragon star said during an appearance on Thursday’s Today show. “She apparently watched it on a projector on a Sunday night.”

As for the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last April aged 99, Smith noted he did not stream the series.

“I know Philip definitely didn’t do that,” said Smith, who played a young Philip. “My friend sat with him next to him [a] dinner and asked. I think Philip asked my friend if he did The Crown. [My friend said,] “I can not resist. Have you seen The Crown?’ [And then Philip] turned around and said, ‘Don’t be ridiculous.’”

Smith also added that there was a moment at an event when he met Prince Harry and the former king made a joke of him.

“[Harry called me] grandfather,” Smith said. “I can’t claim to know if he’s watching [‘The Crown’] currently, but he watched a bit back then.

Harry previously confessed to watching some of the series with his wife Meghan Markle. The Duke of Sussex, 38, stopped by The Late Late Show With James Corden in February 2021 and noted the series was a little fictional.

“It’s loosely based on the truth,” Harry said. “Of course it’s not entirely accurate … It gives you a rough idea of what that lifestyle is, what the pressure is to put duty and service above family and anything else that can come of it.”

However, Harry preferred the show to the news.

"The crown" has a complicated relationship with the royal family as it shows both the good and bad sides of the family.
Several members of the company have reportedly been watching the Netflix royal drama.

“I’m much more comfortable with ‘The Crown’ than the stories written about my family, my wife or myself because it’s the difference between the two [‘The Crown’ being] obviously fiction, take it as you will, but [my life] will be reported as fact because you’re supposedly new,” he said. “I have a real problem with that.”

In 2016, Doctor Who alumnus Smith opened up about meeting Prince William at a polo tournament during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show alongside his Crown co-star Claire Foy.

He spoke about how he felt embarrassed to tell the 40-year-old Duke of Cambridge that he would be playing his grandfather on the show.

“The lady who did the lineup said, ‘This is Matt and he’s about to play Prince Philip.’ And then she said, ‘Do you have any advice for him?'” Smith said at the time. “And then I thought, ‘God, I’m going to die.’ All [William] said [about Philip was], ‘Legend. He’s an absolute legend.’”

As for his love for the royal family, Smith told Today that he would like to see the sovereign’s funeral on Monday.

“I think it’s a piece of history. I don’t think we’ll ever have another monarch serving 70 years… I want to be in London. I want to experience it. I think I really want to be part of the ceremony,” he said. “[I want to] Check it out with a group of friends at my local pub.”
