One battalion claims troops were struck by an “unknown substance” which made its men dizzy and stopped breathing.

The unidentified agent was said to have been dropped over the city by a Russian drone, according to unconfirmed reports from the city’s Azov regiment.

Ms Truss wrote on Twitter tonight, warning Russia: “Any use of such weapons would be a callous escalation in this conflict and we will hold Putin and his regime accountable.”

It comes after Britain’s Defense Ministry yesterday indicated Russia may turn to deadly phosphorus bombs in attempts to break down resistance in Mariupol.

A pro-Russian general in Donbas previously proposed the idea, telling state media it would “smoke the Ukrainian moles from underground.”

Claims about the chemical attack were also tweeted by Ukrainian MP Ivanna Klympush.

She wrote: “Russia used an unknown substance in #Mariupol 1.5 hours ago.

“Victims experience respiratory arrest, vestibulo-atactic syndrome. Most likely chemical weapons!

“This is a red line beyond which the economy of despotism must be destroyed.

The Azov regiment of Ukraine also tweeted: “Russian occupying forces have used a poisonous substance of unknown origin against Ukrainian military and civilians in the city of Mariupol, which was dropped by an enemy drone.

“The victims are in respiratory arrest…the effects of the unknown substance are being investigated.”

Western leaders are increasingly concerned that they are desperate Putin will use chemical weapons as his invasion falters.

It comes after the city was devastated by several terrible strikes that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians.

Up to 90% of the city is home to 400,000 residents Warwas destroyed or damaged after a month of heavy shelling Ukrainian authorities.

Mariupol is believed to be surrounded by Russian troops, with the commanders resorting to vile attacks to break the will of the people living there.

At least 300 people seek shelter in a theater in the city were killed in a Russian airstrike last month.
