After years of speculation and deliberation, PUBG: Battlegrounds will be free to play forever next year. The announcement comes as part of a new trailer at The Game Awards on Thursday night, pegged January 12 as the date the classic battle royale moves on.

This new model will let anyone enjoy PUBG experience through the usual quick match, but with some limitations. Free-to-play users cannot participate in ranked matches and cannot create custom games. For full functionality, players will have to purchase a new Battleground Plus premium account: a one-time purchase gives access to anything locked in the free version and comes with some currency and cosmetics additional, as well as a hundred percent XP increase. However, it is completely optional, as nothing in the purchase is necessary to continue enjoying the meat of the game.

Lucky for those who bought PUBG, Battleground Plus will automatically be unlocked along with some legacy rewards to aid the game. Legacy players will automatically receive Battle Hardened cosmetics along with nameplates and a special pan. To celebrate the change in model, Krafton opened a pre-registration site welcome players to try out the new version of the game and participate in events that involve inviting friends and participating PUBG gameplay quiz for some free loot in the game.

Despite being surpassed by Fortnite, PUBG still holds a strong place in the gaming market as a precursor to the battle royale craze. One thing many competitors have overtaken is price, and now the barrier to entry has finally come down. It was an unsurprising move when rumor around one last switch, free trial period is said to be testing the waters for such a change and continues the success of the battle royale genre.
