Does Star Trek: Prodigy’s USS Protostar make any sense or is the universe falling apart?
Star Trek: Prodigy did everything but came out saying it was a spiritual sequel to Star Trek: Voyager. We are not complaining. Personally, I love Voyager and would love to see a sequel series; spiritual or not. The ship of the series, the Protostar, even looks a bit like the Voyager ship.
So what’s the point of being explicit? Well, Protostar is clearly the fastest ship in the universe, but it’s also the most mysterious space-breaking ship. Obviously the ship is based on and is designed to be more like the Voyager ship. All in all, the whole speed factor of the ship (the Voyager is also a fast ship), and the fact that their Emergency Medical Hologram is literally the captain of the Voyager.
Money star there are also designs that seem to suggest that some of its designs come from Hirogen, which Janway will have to give to Starfleet at some point during the final stages of the mission thanks to Project Pathfinder or after she returned.
All these details suggest that the Protostar was built, or at least, completed after Voyager returned home.
The Protostar timeline has the potential to disrupt the universe if not handled properly.
Child prodigy was established just a few years after Voyager. We all know that it took seven years for the Voyager crew to essentially cover a quarter of the way through that quadrant, with the rest achieved by a series of Borg subspace segments.
Given that the shows are set somewhere in the Delta Quadrant, it’s safe to assume they’re somewhere Voyager has never been. It could be at the border of the Alpha and Delta quadrants or somewhere deep within.
The reality is that the ship has been abandoned for several years and you are looking at a travel period ranging from three to maybe five years depending on when the ship was first launched.
Five more years to find yourself deep in the heart of the Delta Quadrant? That might seem unbelievable, and even with its new engine, that would actually make things too hard to believe and accept.
That said, there are plenty of simple explanations that manufacturers can apply. Like the wormhole, another Caretaker scenario, and coming from the future. While there are details regarding the plot the series could go with, it would make much more sense if the ship went missing in a wormhole or black hole shortly after its maiden test flight.
