Probation officer serving 27 years for murder arrested in NYC woman murder

A criminal who was released from prison last year after serving 27 years on murder charges was arrested in a new murder Thursday in Staten Island, police officers said.

Shaeem Chavis, 45, was arrested at his parole officer’s office and charged with the shooting and fatality of Nadine Russel, 61, at her Park Hill Avenue home on Wednesday, police said.

Chavis – who was on life probation after nearly three decades for a 1993 murder – is believed to have shot Russel in the head and a 43-year-old man she was friends with in the shoulder around 6 a.m. at her apartment, shared the police with.

She was pronounced dead on the spot. The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition.

Chavis was charged with murder, assault, criminal possession of a loaded firearm, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal use of a firearm, police said.

A man who was also shot in the act was in stable condition.

He was released from prison in March 2021 for killing one person in a robbery on November 13, 1993, officials said.

Police believe the new murder was narcotics-related because the surviving victim gave testimony of drug activity at the scene, officials said. Probation officer serving 27 years for murder arrested in NYC woman murder
