Princess Diana’s Ford Escort is up for auction

Princess Diana’s beloved black Ford Escort will soon be auctioned off.

“We wouldn’t be surprised if it went for over $100,000,” Arwell Richards, a classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, which will host the Aug. 27 auction, told the Daily Mail.

The Ford Escort RS comes with 25,000 miles, a lifetime tracker, a spare key, Ford internal notes and the car’s registration documents.

The People’s Princess drove the small family car for three years – from 1985 to 1988, when Prince William and Harry were young – until the Royal Protection Service made her switch to a higher-end model that offered more privacy and protection.

“Parallels could be drawn with the RS Turbo’s reputation as a people’s sports car and the people’s princess tribute bestowed upon Princess Diana by the British public,” say the auctioneers.

“The RS Turbo was never designed to be driven by the wife of the second in line to the British throne or to transport the future king.”

Although Princess Di drives more luxurious cars, auctioneers said the Ford Escort RS Turbo “far outperforms her at auction and in some cases sells for three times the price of comparable models.”

This car is said to have been the Princess’ car of choice because it reminded her of her previous car, which was also an Escort, although it was red instead of black.

The Daily Mail also reported that the car was likely an escape for Diana, possibly using the car to meet friends or go shopping.

To better fit a royal lifestyle, Ford’s dedicated vehicle development department gave the car a “stealth makeover” that included a five-slat grille instead of three, as well as an extra rear-view mirror for the security guard she had to drive with.

The car has come a long way since it belonged to the People’s Princess and had three owners after her before joining the Ford RS collection.

However, Silverstone Auctions noted that the vehicle is still in “top condition”.
