Prince William is booed by the Wembley crowd at the FA Cup Final

Prince William was booed by sections of the crowd as he appeared on the pitch ahead of the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

The mockery began when the Duke of Cambridge, the Football Association’s president, was introduced to fans during BBC television coverage ahead of the game.

The boos continued as William walked onto the pitch, where he met and shook hands with players from Chelsea and Liverpool ahead of Saturday’s game.

Some fans inside the stadium also appeared to take offense at the national anthem and a performance of the Christian hymn Abide With Me, which were also the target of boos.

Liverpool were victorious in the encounter themselves, eventually beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.

The behavior of some fans in the stadium prompted condemnation from MPs.

Commons spokesman Sir Lindsay Hoyle told MailOnline: “I strongly condemn all the fans who booed Prince William at Wembley today.

“The FA Cup Final should be an opportunity for us to come together as a country. It shouldn’t be ruined by the utterly shameful behavior of a minority of fans. In this year of all years – the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – it’s terrible.”

And Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “We have the most wonderful monarch and these fans who have booed do not represent their clubs or our country.”

The Duke of Cambridge seemed unfazed by the earlier boos and handed the FA Cup trophy to a jubilant Liverpool after their win over Chelsea at Wembley.

Coach Jürgen Klopp’s side beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after 120 goalless minutes on Saturday.

William presented the red-ribboned trophy to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson from the royal box as fans cheered. He attended the game after personally making podcast host Deborah James a lady.

The Duke visited the 40-year-old, known online as Bowel Babe, at her family home in Surrey to present her with the honor for her “tireless campaign” to raise awareness of bowel cancer.

Posting pictures of William with herself and her family to Instagram, Dame Deborah said the visit gave her family “so much reason to smile in the sadness”.
