Power plant fire: A coal block catches fire at NRG’s WA Parish Generating Station in Fort Bend County

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Seven fire departments responded to a fire at an NRG plant in Fort Bend County overnight.

According to Thompson Fire Chief Keeland Spaulding, around 11:40 p.m., a coal block caught fire on the roof of the NRG WA Parish power plant at 2500 Yu Jones Road near Smithers Lake

A spokesman for NRG, which owns and operates the facility, told ABC13 that while the station is shut down due to the fire, everything is safe and there is no risk to the community or the environment.

Everyone is also accounted for, and no injuries have been reported.

At the last check, the crews were still pumping water to make sure the fire was out.

The cause was not immediately known.
