Possible serial killer targeting Muslims in New Mexico

Authorities are investigating the possibility that a serial killer has been hunting Muslims in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after four men of the faith were murdered there last year.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Saturday that she had deployed additional state police to help investigate the “targeted killings.”

“The targeted killing of Albuquerque’s Muslim residents is deeply upsetting and utterly intolerable,” she wrote on Twitter.

“We will continue in our pursuit of justice for the victims and their families and will use any means necessary to apprehend the killer or killers — and we WILL find them,” the Democrat said in a statement.

She added, “I am upset and saddened that this is happening in New Mexico, a place that prides itself on its cultural and spiritual diversity. We’re not.”

The statement gave no details on whether investigators have any leads or confirm if the murders are linked.

An unnamed Muslim man was murdered Friday night after Monday’s shooting of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, police said.

Hussain’s assassination comes after Aftab Hussein was assassinated on July 26 and Mohammad Ahmadi was killed in November 2021.

Hussain and Hussein were both Pakistani and attended the same mosque, according to the New York Times. The killings have sparked an outcry from Albuquerque’s tight-knit Muslim community. According to the Pew Research Center, less than 1 percent of New Mexico’s two million people are Muslim.

“We are incredibly disgusted by the idea of anyone having so much hatred for innocent people,” said Ahmad Assed, director of the New Mexico Islamic Center, according to the Times. “We are afraid for our families, we are afraid for our children. And we are incredibly confused as to why this is happening.”

President Biden expressed his solidarity with the local Muslim community on Sunday.

“While we await a full investigation, my prayers are with the families of the victims and my government stands strongly behind the Muslim community,” Biden said in a Twitter post. “These hateful attacks have no place in America.”
