Pope Francis says World War III is closer than ever

Pope Francis reiterated his earlier warnings of a global conflict Thursday while speaking in an audience with papal officials.

The pope reiterated a claim he first made during a general audience a week ago – that the earth is already locked in a “piecemeal” third world war.

The pope reiterated the observation Thursday in audience with his papal representatives — prelates of the Catholic Church who represent the papacy in foreign nations around the world.

“The storm of the COVID-19 pandemic has imposed various restrictions on our daily life and pastoral activities,” the Pope said. “Now the worst seems to be over and thank God we can meet again.”

“But unfortunately, Europe and the whole world are being shaken by a war of particular gravity in terms of the violation of international law, the risks of nuclear escalation and the grave economic and social consequences,” Pope Francis continued. “It’s a ‘piecemeal’ third world war that you witness in the places where you fulfill your mission.”

The pope made a similar remark during his August 31 general audience, where he commemorated the anniversary of the dramatic beginnings of World War II.

Pope Francis speaks out against the invasion of Ukraine.
The pope is not afraid to speak out on issues he disagrees with.

“Tomorrow you will remember the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, which so painfully scarred the Polish nation,” the Pope said, before dubbing the current era “World War III” and saying that the all-encompassing conflict will most likely be piecemeal , unlike previous global wars, according to Vatican media.

Pope Francis has referred to his “piecemeal” observations of World War III since the start of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“A few years ago it occurred to me that we are witnessing a third world war, fought piecemeal,” the pope told editors of La Civilta Cattolica news agency in June. “Today the Third World War has been declared for me.”

The invasion of Ukraine was seen as an opportunity for arms dealers.
In his earlier remarks, Pope Francis said the invasion of Ukraine was an opportunity for arms dealers.

The pope pointed to the possibility that the war was “either provoked or not prevented” and that there was “interest in testing and selling weapons.”

The Pope previously shifted the blame for the war Arms manufacturers and arms dealerswho he claimed were happy to have their products tested in the conflict.

“What is before our eyes is a situation of world war, global interests, arms sales and geopolitical appropriation martyring a heroic people,” the pope told the outlet.
