The suspect who shot dead an elderly woman at a Houston restaurant was killed by police, according to authorities.

Robin Baucom, 59, was shot in the torso at Cracker Barrel, where she worked for 34 years, after helping a colleague escape the gunman.

According to Harris County deputies, she was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

The man whom police said was a “person of interest” in the incident was shot dead by deputies Monday night.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the man was in the 17700 block of the W. Lake Houston Parkway in Atascocita. Delegate fire their weapons while trying to arrest the man.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Person of interest has two felony warrants unrelated to the shooting that killed Baucom. The delegate approached the man, who was walking.

When they called his name, authorities said the man had already started running. The delegates said that he appeared to have a weapon and that he was pointing it at them.

No delegate was injured in the shooting and his identity has not been released.

According to deputies, the Baucom colleague was approached by a man in the passenger seat of a metallic gray Dodge Charger as he was said to have gone out and tried to get the employee’s wallet.

Baucom, who had already entered the restaurant, let his staff inside and pushed the door shut to prevent the man from entering. He pulled out a gun and shot Baucom.

Baucom is survived by her husband, three children, and three grandchildren.

“We send our condolences to her family. It’s sad to think that these victims are simply starting their day at work,” Gonzalez said. on Twitter.

A vigil was held outside the restaurant for Baucom and was attended by family and friends.

“She was our hero and we hope she will be remembered as a hero because she lost her life trying to protect her staff and Cracker Barrel,” Baucom’s sister Gail said. Baucom, tell KPRC.

“She always took the business wherever she needed it.”

In a statement, Cracker Barrel acknowledged the shooting and death of Baucom.

“We can confirm that there was a criminal shooting at our Houston store on the North Freeway prior to opening Saturday morning, which resulted in our store’s sub-manager injured because she protected other employees from harm.

“All of Cracker Barrel is focused solely on supporting our manager’s family, her officers, and local law enforcement as we grapple with this tragedy and grief.” the company said.

Therefore, the restaurant will be closed for at least a week. According to the company, employees will be paid their normal salary.
