Pokimane hits back at Twitch streamers defending gambling meta: ‘It’s really bad’

Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys made a strong statement during her recent broadcast, claiming that streamers who sponsor gambling are taken directly by their viewers.

As the discourse around the resurgence of the gambling meta generates more steam, opinions and feelings intertwine with larger thoughts that constantly seep into the public eye.

As warnings play alongside gambling content to remind viewers their chances of winning are slim, celebrity creators including Ludwig are pushing for the platform to be held accountable for the content it allows.

Alongside her claim of Twitch responsibility, Pokimane went live on May 19 with a stinging message to streamers who are making sponsorship deals. They accuse her of taking money at the expense of her viewership.

Pokimane drew a clear line in the sand with her arguments against the gambling meta.

In a discussion comparing microtransactions in mobile games to gambling, a reference to an extreme message xQc posted on his Discord, Pokimane avoided the notion that both “bad” events have equal moral standing.

“You’re comparing something that might well be bad to something that is really, really bad,” she said. “Why do people try so hard to make gambling seem less bad by comparing it to other things? We still all agree that’s really freaking bad, right?”

Not flinching at her words, Imane put the blame for the proliferation of gambling streams squarely on the feet of the streamers who reap the benefits.

Referring to the sponsorship streams as Robin Hood in reverse, Imane explained, “I’m all for taking money from the rich and giving to the people, but you’re rich and you’re going to make millions from your viewers,” she continued, “because it works like this. Your viewers are losing money.”

Pokimane used a Microsoft Paint project to illustrate her point, claiming that gambling sponsorship money comes from the following cycle. “Viewers lose money. Ruins life. Sad.” In comparison to how “bad” mobile games make money: “Rich investors. people buy game Spend money. No end of life. No sadness.”

Pokimane reached a passionate crescendo in her argument, ending her diatribe on the subject by saying, “Just because other things that are less bad are legal, does that mean we should allow worse things to happen? It’s such horrible logic for a society.”
