Pokimane explains the biggest downside of streaming to YouTube versus Twitch

Streaming giant Imane “Pokimane” shared her take on the biggest difference between streaming on Twitch and YouTube. Though she explained that streaming on YouTube isn’t “bad,” she likened it to being “on an island.”

The shocking announcement that Twitch streamer Sykkuno is leaving the platform in favor of YouTube Gaming has sparked a wave of debate in the community. While many YouTubers have praised Sykkuno for the move, he has also opened up the discussion about streaming on YouTube versus Twitch.

Now, Twitch streaming giant Pokimane has shared her take on the difference between streaming on the two platforms, saying it’s “harder” for creators to “bounce” on YouTube.

It comes after she previously said she was “happy” with Sykkuno’s platform switch, although it was also a bittersweet moment to see him go.

According to Pokimane, YouTubers have a hard time “bursting” unless they have an existing following.

Pokimane explains “streaming culture” on YouTube vs. Twitch

During her May 3 livestream, Pokimane claimed that there is a big difference between the streaming cultures of YouTube and Twitch. As a result, it can be difficult for creators to “burst” without an already existing audience on the platform.

“Streaming on YouTube, while it’s not a bad thing and I’m in no way trying to demonize it, is very different from Twitch because you’re a little bit more on an island,” Pokimane explained. “There isn’t a very clear discoverability.”

She also claimed that she won’t be “impressed” with YouTube Gaming until she sees “an ecosystem of live streaming” on the Google-owned platform. In comparison, Pokimane claimed, “Twitch has the ecosystem. Twitch has the culture. Twitch has the community.”

According to Pokimane, it can also be difficult for YouTubers to hit a viewership gold mine on YouTube. Pokimane specifically claimed that aspiring streamers might struggle to find their fanbase.

“You need an existing audience. I’ve never seen anyone on YouTube either.” She then compared how popular streamers like Valkyrae and Dr Disrespect already had a strong following before they switched to the platform.

Rumors have been circulating in the past that Pokimane was planning to set up a shop on YouTube, especially when her Twitch contract ended. However, her recent comments prove that she is more than content with her life on Twitch for now.
