Pokemon Go players have actually called the police to prevent the gym from being taken

A Reddit user claims he was the victim of a fake police report created by trolls to stop them from taking over a gym in Pokemon Go.

Gyms have been an integral part of the Pokémon franchise since its inception in 1996. Players defeat the gym leaders to earn badges, and with enough badges they can challenge the toughest trainers in the region.

But in Pokemon Go, gyms work a little differently. Gyms are playgrounds connected to major real-world landmarks. Each gym can be taken over by one of the game’s three teams, and players on other teams will attempt to reclaim the gym.

Because all of this happens in real time, arena battles can sometimes feel like virtual turf battles. All of the violence in the game takes place between virtual monsters, but on rare occasions it can spill over into the real world.

Pokemon Go players call the police during a gym fight

Pokemon Go has one similarity to the animated series that no other game has, and that’s the presence of law enforcement agencies. These non-player characters were quite active during game launch, stopping invaders and responding to injured players.

However Reddit users darthmaclean claims their local police officers arrived at the scene of an ongoing gym fight in response to a false report.

Darthmaclean wrote: “I fought a yellow gym. A few people have defended it. They called the police and then reported my name as offensive.”

The user stated that the trolls drove away as soon as officers arrived at the scene, but they didn’t know anything more about the call. They also shared that their name has been reported, presumably by the gym’s defenders, and they are being forced to change their username in order to continue playing.

So… last night I fought a yellow gym. a few people defended it. They called the police to me and then reported my name as offensive. so i have to change my name. People are seriously screwed today. has this happened to anyone else? out of Pokemon go

Their former Pokemon Go username was “JesusEh,” a name they’ve had since the game’s release. Many comments thought it was outrageous that Niantic would make him change his name, while others pointed out that it was a potential offense to religious gamers.

A number of comments on the post shared similar interactions with the police while playing Pokemon Go. However, after explaining the game to the officials, they were allowed to continue playing.
