PEP GUARDIOLA will have the opportunity to realize his dream of becoming an international boss when he leaves Manchester City – from the Netherlands.
Guardiola has make no secret of his wishes to one day take on a national team as he spends his career as a domestic coach.
And the Dutch FA planned to tempt him to do the same to them – even though they knew it wouldn’t last for at least another 18 months.
And for all that he harbors international managerial ambitions, the Spaniard has also made no hint that he is close to cutting back and leaving Manchester.
He recently questioned whether he would ever be interested in becoming England captain one day, if given the opportunity.
And he is frank support for Catalan independence which means he will never be able to shoulder his home country.
Still, the Netherlands – and the opportunity to govern the country that spawned one of his heroes in Johan Cruyff – is certainly appealing.
Cruyff is Barcelona boss when he rose through the youth team levels, making Man City’s boss arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world.
The Dutch legend was at the heart of the Dutch Total Football revolution of the 1970s – an ideology that shaped Guardiola’s own managerial thinking.
And there is already a familial relationship with the Netherlands, as Pep’s brother Pere – who also represents him – has just been linked with Dutch football body SEG.
Louis van Gaal is currently in third place at the helm of Oranje, replacing Frank de Boer after a disastrous Euro run.
But the former Manchester United manager is 70 years old and is expected to step down after the Qatar World Cup.
Guardiola is likely to win his fourth Premier League title in six seasons as City boss, and Etihad bosses expect him to stick around beyond the end of his current contract.
However, while they hope he stays to build a dynasty at the club, the Netherlands also want to present an international carrot as a challenge instead.
