Patrick Vieira misses Crystal Palace training session due to ’emergency family matter’

Crystal Palace assistant Osian Roberts stepped out to face the media on Friday after Patrick Vieira had to leave training due to ‘family issues’ but the Eagles boss is braced for Sunday’s clash with Manchester United

The former Arsenal captain is expected to train normally at the club’s Beckenham base before he was asked to leave due to an urgent matter.

Roberts filled the void by leading Palace’s penultimate game ahead of the weekend’s game and then taking on press conference duties.

“Patrick was fine this morning to prepare for practice. Unfortunately, he received a phone call and had to leave immediately to deal with a family emergency,” he said.

“My thoughts are with Patrick and family first and foremost but I’m just here to try to make sure that as an employee we come together.

“We have a good staff and the players as usual were professional the way they were supposed to be so we had a good training session.”

Former Wales assistant Roberts admits the Eagles boss’s absence has made no difference but he is hopeful Vieira will return this weekend.

Asked if the Palace manager could attend the game against United, number two added: “I hope so. Obviously we just finished training, just got on the pitch so I haven’t spoken to him since training, but I will and I expect normal service to resume tomorrow.

“It makes a big difference when Patrick isn’t here because he’s our leader, our manager, and you always want him to lead the top issues.

“Of course it’s our responsibility in this unfortunate case to do everything correctly to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, as smoothly as possible until he gets back to us. I.”

If Vieira steps out onto the Old Trafford pitch this weekend, he will face the third manager to sit in the United chair this season.

Ralf Rangnick was granted a visa on Thursday to officially begin his term as interim boss, which will run until the end of the campaign.

Michael Carrick left United following their win over Arsenal in midweek after he became a caretaker when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked last month.

“Of course when a new manager comes in, it’s clear that there is a possibility of some change even in the short time he has been able to stick with the team,” said Roberts.

“We’ll have to wait and see but really we’ll just focus on what we normally do. We’re going to focus on our own performance and try to deliver something that will get us something in the game. ”

Joel Ward will miss Palace with a one-match suspension for picking up a fifth yellow card in Tuesday’s loss to Leeds.

Nathan Ferguson (fitness) and James McArthur (hamstring) are also expected to be out while Joachim Andersen, who also has a hamstring problem, will need to be evaluated. Patrick Vieira misses Crystal Palace training session due to ’emergency family matter’
